Location Research

Our film is based in an estate and we feel this is a suitable location for our film opening. Estates similar to these can sometimes be notoriously 'rough' and as our film/ film opening is a crime thriller we believe this location will be excellent a ties in with our film genre. Tanners Road,
N18, is the specific location we have researched and are planning to use in our film opening as it looks similar to other crime thrillers. For example the Summer House estate in Top Boy, a series based around gang crime, drugs and violence, also the estate in Woolwich which was used for the Channel 4 series Gangland.

Music Video Refference

Here is the music video where parts of our idea developed from, using this video for inspiration will be useful as the story line is similar. Furthermore some shots in this video are going to be adapted and used in our film opening.

Film Opening Inspiration

Using a well known music video for inspiration, Abra Cadabra - Robbery, we extracted shots and scenes we could potentialy adapt and put into our film opening. We feel this music video has similar aspects to our opening idea hence why we felt it was important to analyse it regardless of whether we use it for inspiration or not. As we plan to be using a car in our video taking screenshots from the music video of them in the car is primary research and can be used to guide us in the right direction without directly copying it. In addition we plan to use a wide shot of one of the main characters walking out of the estate in our opening scene, similar to the 3rd image. Using this primary research will steer us in the right direction when filming as we will have a rough idea of what we want the shot to look like.

First Pitch

This was our first first first where we discussed our previous idea, however our horror film idea was only given an amber light due to the idea being to 'cliche'. On the other hand this gave us the opportunity to re-think and possibly come up with a better idea.

As this pitch wasn't as successful as we would of liked we will undoubtably do another, presenting a better and well planned idea. We are currently developing a new film opening with a totally different story line.

Art Of The Title

Creed opening is dramatic and engaging from the very start, this makes it enjoyable for viewers as they are instantly attracted to the film. in addition, jumping from scene to scene establishes the film and helps to construct the story line. I believe my film opening will have some aspects of this film opening as it is exciting

The opening scene for 'Trapped' is a lot more mysterious than other films, this builds a sense of mystery consequently luring viewers into watching it. The strange images are quite abstract  and may confuse viewers however this will only make them more interested to find out more about them. Furthermore the opening sequence is very dark and represents the crime/ evil within programme.

The opening scene is very dramatic and gets straight into action. The audience are unaware of what is going on from the very start, many films use this feature as it grabs the audiences attention. Despite this, 22 Jump Street is a comedy, unlike our film. Consequently our opening may be similar however it will not have the comedy aspect.

The Guardians of the Galaxy is a very dark opening, which connotes the darkness within the film. This representation instantly outlines the film as the audience will know film consists of evil. In addition the contrasting orange titles stands out to the dark CGI background, the brightness can symbolise a good vs evil theme. A dark, miserable, CGI opening may be enjoyable however i do not feel this theme will fit our film opening.

Prelim

For preparation for our 2 minute movie opening we created a preliminary video. From this exercise we started to develop skills that would be crucial in our film opening, for example how to correctly use panning shots and making them look as professional as possible. In addition to this, editing skills were also acquired as we spent more time editing than we did filming, this was an insight as to how much editing will be required to make our film opening look good. We learnt that for every seconds worth of film there are 24 frames that can be edited. For every shot we need to decide on camera angles and techniques, in our prelim we used a variety of shots; medium, panning and over the shoulder.

Labels
Panning shot of Ellie bursting through the door and engaging in coversation.

Labels
Another panning shot of Ellie walking into the room, however the camera is placed on the floor.

Labels
Over the shoulder shot of the conversation between Serine and Ellie.

Labels
The second over the shoulder shot of the conversation about Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt's divorce.

Shot type

In class we learnt how directors can make scenes more interesting and engaging by using a variety of camera angles, shots and techniques. The most common types of shots are close ups, medium shots and long shots.

Close up shots are often used to show characters  faces, these shots  allow for facial expression to be shown clearly. Often when a character is shown in a close up, it signifies their importance within the scene. Leading characters may also have several  close up shots. It is rare for someone other than a main role having multiple close up shots.

Mediums shots are favoured  in sequences with dialogue or action. It allows for viewers to partially see the background as well as the subjects facial expression in addition to body language. The borderline between a mid shot and long shot is not definite however medium shots appear to be waist up and have are more focused on the human, building or object within the shot.

Long shots, often referred to as a full shot or wide shot, often shows the entire character or building whilst showing the audience the surrounding. Long shots are often used to set the scene and go hand in hand with establishing shots. This is a common technique used in film openings.
